Filing Income Tax Returns
In Quebec, we have to pay two types of taxes: (1) federal tax and (2) Quebec tax. The taxation year is: 1st January-31st December and the deadline to file tax returns is the 30th of April each year.
There is a Quebec tax form and a federal tax form given below. These forms will be given to you by your employer mentioning your tax details.
- T4/T4A/RL-1
- REL 31
First-time tax filers for Quebec should send the form by mail whereas first-time federal tax forms could be filled and submitted online. From the second year and onwards Quebec tax returns could also be filed online.
If you are getting any remuneration for french classes, you get a receipt from the school and you have to declare it. However, this remuneration is tax-exempt.
Any income you are earning, you should have to declare it.
If you bring money while coming to Canada, you don't need to pay tax.
You don't need to pay tax if your family member sends you some money.
Get slips from the dispensary of your medical expenses and mention them in the tax returns. The only expense that was not covered by the medical insurance provider will be filed for the expense.
Get a letter from the landlord for the tax declaration.
If you have a tax exemption, you still need to file the tax, and revenue Quebec will return it to you.
If your spouse is not working, prepare a tax return mentioning her dependence on you, it will give you some credits. You can use some credit the amount is around 13000$. In tax returns, we can claim 50% of the credit amount when we file tax returns.
If you are working from home and your employer gives you a letter that this person is working from home, then you can declare home-office expenses i.e., office rent, internet charges, etc. Even if your employer doesn't give you the letter, you can still claim home office expenses.
If you are living in Quebec at the end of December, you have to pay tax in Quebec. Tax returns depend on the place where you are living at the end of the year.
It's better to take help from any tax filing organization to fill in tax returns accurately.
